My bird bath used to be my Nan's. It was something I wanted when she passed as she loved birds and her garden. It had a hairline crack in the top section and she actually used to have an ice cream carton sitting in it because it didn't hold water! When I put it in my car, the crack gave way and it broke in half. My family thought I was nuts for bringing home a broken bird bath and not just chucking it out the tip but a friend glued the top back together and it was good as new. I put it in my garden so I could watch the birds play in it and feel close to Nan.
When Cyclone Seroja came through earlier in the year, a tree came down on Nan's bird bath and this time the bottom section got broken. I bought some glue and as I was fixing it, Nan, whose spirit was sitting on the back verandah with me, laughed and said "it's just a bird bath" and I replied "I know Nan but it's your bird bath" then I laughed too and said "if it gets to the point where there is more glue than bird bath, I promise I'll part with it" and we both agreed that was a good deal So the now twice repaired bird bath has once again taken pride of place in my garden.
I was looking at it this morning and thinking it was such a great metaphor for why I am opening my home for a women's retreat next year. Sometimes we need to acknowledge when it's time to let go and stop putting any more energy into a situation that can't be fixed but by the same token, we are infinitely capable of healing OURSELVES. Cracks and imperfections do not diminish our value or make us any less beautiful to those who love us.
Being held by a small, intimate group of like minded women as you immerse yourself in this peaceful and idyllic country retreat is designed to nourish your soul, nurture your divine feminine and allow you space for mindfulness and healing. Putting yourself first is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
